Overview
The AAT is a globally recognized professional body for accounting technicians. It offers a range of qualifications aimed at people who wish to pursue careers in accounting, bookkeeping, and finance. The qualifications are suitable for both beginners and those with some experience in the field.

Students can start with any qualification depending on existing skills and experience. For the best chance of success, we recommend that students begin their studies with a good standard of English and maths.
Those who can provide evidence of gaining a previous, relevant qualification from an external awarding body may not have to sit all AAT assessments.
Students may be eligible for exemptions if they have:
- previous finance or accounting qualifications
- an accounting or finance degree.
Choose your Level
The AAT Qualification Structure
You’ll study 4 units for the Level 3 Diploma first:
- Preparing Financial Statements
- Management Accounting Techniques
- Tax Processes for Businesses
- Business Awareness
You’ll then study 5 units from the Level 4 Diploma, made up of 3 core units:
Core units
- Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements
- Applied Management Accounting
- Internal Accounting Systems and Controls
You’ll then study 5 units from the Level 4 Diploma, made up your choice of 2 optional units:
Optional units
- Business Tax
- Personal Tax
- Audit and Assurance
- Credit and Debt Management
- Cash and Financial Management
AAT levels
Level 2 Certificate in Accounting
Covers the basic principles of accountancy and if you’ve never studied accountancy before this is your starting point. You’ll learn the basic principles of accountancy, such as double-entry bookkeeping and basic costing.
Level 3 Diploma in Accounting
Builds on the knowledge gained at Level 2. If you work in accounts or have studied accountancy before, you may be able to start at this level. You’ll learn how to prepare final accounts for Sole Traders and Partnership as well as dealing with VAT returns for businesses.
Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting
The final level, teaching you more complex accounting theory, and lets you choose two specialist subjects. You’ll learn about budgeting, management accounting, preparing financial statements, accounting systems, and tax.
